The Mindset That Changed My Business
There’s a side of real estate investing that doesn’t get talked about enough.
A lot of people enter business and investing with a “get mine” mentality.
How do I make more money?
How do I scale faster?
How do I win?
But over the years, I realized something important:
That mindset eventually leaves you empty.
The biggest shift in my business happened when I stopped looking at investing as a transaction and started looking at it as a responsibility.
A responsibility to create true win-win relationships.
Win-Win or No Deal
One of the principles that has guided me for years is simple:
Win-win or no deal.
When we buy a property, I don’t want just our company to benefit.
I want:
- The seller to feel respected
- The lender to feel safe
- The contractor to make money
- The resident to have a better place to live
- Our team to grow
- Our investors to sleep peacefully at night
That framework changed everything for me.
Because when people genuinely feel like you care about creating value for everyone involved, trust begins to compound.
And in business, trust compounds faster than money.
Most Investors Are Playing Too Small
And in business, trust compounds faster than money.
At the recent Private Lender Playbook launch event, one of the things I wanted people to understand is that private lending and real estate investing are not just for wealthy insiders.
Most of the lenders we work with are everyday people.
Teachers. Contractors. Realtors. Small business owners. Retirees.
People with regular jobs who simply wanted a better place for their money to work.
And honestly, I believe we are entering a season where more people are going to start searching for stable, tangible investment opportunities.
The markets are volatile. Debt is everywhere. The economy feels uncertain.
Even some of the most respected investors in history are sitting on massive amounts of cash because they believe things are disconnected from reality.
That creates opportunity.
Not for hype.
Not for speculation.
But for trustworthy operators.
The Light Bulb Moment
Years ago, I had a realization:
I was playing small.
Not because I lacked ambition, but because I underestimated how many people I could help.
I used to think raising private capital was about convincing people to give you money.
Now I realize it’s often about helping people solve a problem.
Many people are looking for:
- Predictable income
- Simplicity
- Stability
- Better communication
- Someone they trust
That changed the way I approached conversations.
I stopped trying to “pitch.”
I simply started having honest conversations with people.
And to be honest, I stumbled through a lot of those early conversations.
I got tongue tied.
I didn’t have perfect answers.
I made mistakes.
But I knew a few things:
- I would work hard
- I would bring good deals to the table
- I would honor my commitments
- I would treat people fairly
That foundation mattered more than polished sales skills.
Over time, one lender became two.
Two became five.
Five became many more.
Some of those lender relationships have now lasted through dozens and dozens of successful loans over the years.
Business Is Bigger Than Money
Money matters.
But if money is the only goal, eventually business becomes exhausting.
The businesses that last are usually built on something deeper:
- Trust
- Service
- Integrity
- Consistency
- Long-term thinking
That’s the mindset that changed my business.
And honestly, it changed my life too.
Because once you stop viewing business as “taking” and start viewing it as creating value for others, everything begins to shift.
Your relationships improve.
Your opportunities grow.
Your reputation compounds.
And your business becomes far more fulfilling.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy.
But it does mean it’s worth it.
