CHOOSE WORDS WISELY

I was reading yesterday and this story about the Washington Redskins was told that I had never heard before.

In 1981 when the team showed up for their first team meeting head coach Joe Gibbs wrote on the board for the team:
WIN THE SUPER BOWL.

And they in fact did win the Superbowl that year.

Now, fast forward to the following year.

The team arrives back to training camp for their first team meeting that year and Joe Gibbs wrote on the board:
GET BACK TO THE SUPER BOWL!

And guess what happened?

They got back to the Super Bowl, but lost.

Now I’m sure a lot of teams that year, and every year share the goal to ‘Win the Super Bowl’, but the lesson is this:

The clarity and precision of your words (and thoughts) matter more than you know and will impact your future actions, and thus results *whether you realize it or not.*

The thoughts we have and the words we speak program our minds.

You’ve probably heard of NLP before.

If not, it stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The quick summary of NLP is that it is proven to be effective as a way for someone to change someone’s thoughts and behaviors to help achieve desired outcomes for them.

NLP is not hypnotherapy.

Instead, it operates through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in someone’s thoughts and behavior.

It can be used to influence others (by helping shape their belief system and in turn, their actions) and you can use it on yourself.

*You are already using NLP whether you realize it or not, but there’s a difference in using it vs using it effectively.

I first heard of this from Tony Robbins in 2006.

Tony’s book was one of the 1st personal development books that I had ever read, and it changed my life.

I remember after reading that book and just a couple of other real estate books I told myself, I was going to give it a shot.

Why not?

I had nothing to lose at that point, I was dead broke and heading nowhere.

So what did I do?

I went to the store, got a big white poster board and GOT CLEAR on my real estate goals that year.

I told myself I was going to buy 10 Rental properties (with specific details on the criteria) that year which was crazy since I had no money and had never invested in anything, especially real estate.

So I wrote down my clear goal and drew 10 squares on the poster board and began to think about HOW…..

And that’s where the magic happened.

My internal mind went to work to help me figure out a way to hit that goal.

And I took action.

Each time I bought a home that year I would fill in the blank square and by the end of the year, I filled in all 10 squares.

This changed my life forever.

So what this entire post boils down to is this:

The precision of your words and thoughts matters.

Be precise in your words and thoughts to give yourself a better chance of hitting the target that you really want to hit.

It could be just a minor tweak in your communication (internal or external) that could be the difference between you just getting the big game instead of winning the big game.
